Heat Pumps

Learn More About Heat Pumps

Even though their name implies it, heat pumps do not generate heat. They move it from one place to another. In heating mode, the heat pump absorbs heat from the air outside and moves it indoors through a cycle of compression and expansion of a refrigerant. In cooling mode it works in reverse. Just like an air conditioner the heat pump takes in heat from inside the house and moves it to the outdoors.

Which type of heat pump is best for you? There are a few things to consider when selecting a heat pump. How large is your home? What is the existing heating system? What’s the local climate?

An Ocean Air qualified technician has the expertise to take you through the process and help you to evaluate your specific needs and the type of heat pump that’s best for you.

Benefits of a Heat Pump

Year-Round Comfort

A heat pump is an all-in-one heating system and an air conditioner. It keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer.

Climate Friendly

Heat pumps are an energy-efficient, environmentally friendly alternative heating sources like oil and natural gas/propane heating systems as well as electric furnaces, and baseboard heater. Better still, they also provide air conditioning. Heat pumps can help to reduce your heating emissions by up to 97%.

Good air quality and clean outdoor air quality Safe from pollution, PM 2.5 dust, pure natural atmosphere concept. hand with air bubbles, prevention of pollution, dust, bad air

Better Indoor Air Quality

Heat pumps dehumidify and provide healthy indoor air flow. They have a filtration system that removes pollutants like dust, pollen and other allergens.

Types of Heat Pumps

All heat pumps have an outdoor unit and an indoor unit that work together. They transfer heat to the inside in heating mode and to the outside in home in air conditioning mode. An Ocean Air qualified technician can help you decide on the best type of heat pump taking into account the location, size, layout of your home and the current heating system you are using.

There are five common heat pump types in Nova Scotia:

Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pump:

Ductless mini-split and multi-split heat pumps distribute heat without using duct work. Wall-mounted indoor heads, floor mounted units, or ceiling cassette units can be linked to provide zonal heating to the rooms where they are installed.

Central Ducted Heat Pump

Depending on which mode it is in, a central ducted heat pump moves heat or cool air through ductwork connected to vents in each room. It’s similar to the way an old oil furnace distributes the heated air. New improvement in the design mean that central ducted heat pumps can match the efficiency and performance of most ductless mini-splits.

Dual Fuel Ducted Heat Pump

A dual fuel ducted heat pump works with your main source of heat which will act as your backup heat. It moves heat or air-conditioned air throughout the ductwork connected to vents in each room. A pre-set temperature switch-over point determines when the backup heat source turns on. Most inverter style central ducted units can be set to -15 to -20 degree Celsius (5 to -4 degree Fahrenheit). This saves you money since it only uses the backup source in extreme cold weather situations.

Air-to-Water Heat Pump

This system takes heat from the outside air and carries it to a water-based system, giving you both heating and hot water. An outdoor unit absorbs heat from the outside and transfers it into the heat pump.

Commercial Packaged Heat Pump Unit

Commercial rooftop packaged heat pumps are essential HVAC solutions designed to provide efficient heating and cooling for various commercial environments. These units are strategically installed on rooftops to optimize indoor space utilization and minimize noise disturbance within buildings. Ideal for office complexes, retail establishments, and healthcare facilities, rooftop packaged heat pumps integrate heating, cooling, and ventilation into a single, compact unit, offering comprehensive climate control solutions.

All home assessments are done with load calculation software to ensure your heat pump is neither oversized nor undersized. A heat load calculation is required to ensure the heat pump is sized appropriately for the home’s heating and cooling needs. This approach can save property owners thousands of dollars by avoiding an oversized heat pump, with higher initial and operational costs than necessary. Also avoids undersized equipment that won’t have the capacity to keep your home comfortable. At Ocean Air we do not believe in rule-of-thumb equipment sizing.

Heat Pump Maintenance

Like any heating or air conditioning system, heat pumps require regular maintenance and there are many benefits to scheduling an annual ‘check-up”.

Detect Problems Early
With annual maintenance, qualified technician inspects your heat pump regularly. This allows them to discover, diagnose, and repair potential problems before they turn into major and costly issues.

Ensuring a long Life
When you schedule an annual maintenance you are extending the life of your system and getting more out of your investment. Heat pumps generally last up to last 15 or more years, but that is with proper maintenance and care.

Keep Warranties Active
Most heat pumps come with manufacturer warranties. These only remain valid if proper maintenance is carried out. Stick to your maintenance schedule, and ensure your manufacturer’s warranty stays valid.

Protect Your Investment
A heat pump is a major investment in the comfort of your home. Annual maintenance is the best way to protect that investment.
